How to Avoid Starting a Fire From Your Portable Heater

Did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Agency, roughly “79% of deadly home heating fires start from a portable heater”? The biggest risk factor was the heater sitting within 3 feet of an object, and getting too hot which can start a fire. Below are some tips for avoiding a house fire from your portable heater:

National investigative correspondent Jeff Rossen shows how dangerous they can be and how to protect yourself.

Follow the next steps:

  • Do NOT plug them into a power strip. Place heater 3 feet or more away from any other objects
  • Place on solid, flat surface
  • Never leave the heater unattended.
  • Place the heater out of the way of foot traffic to avoid any tripping hazard
  • Be sure your smoke detectors are placed on each floor, outside each bedroom, and wherever else they should be placed, as recommended by experts.
  • Check your carbon monoxide detectors regularly, to be sure they are in good working condition.
  • Keep an operational fire extinguisher in a room near where the fireplace is.
  • Keep flammable objects at least three feet away from the fireplace.
  • Use a fireplace screen to protect your home from embers and burning logs that may fall and could roll into the room.
